Dean Nimmer & Greg Amenoff 1974 – 78

Dean Nimmer & Greg Amenoff 1974 – 78

These particular scenes are cut from a 25-minute video called, A Tour of the Museum of Fine Arts In Boston with Dan Pike and Bill Bob. I did this and other art-spoof videos with my friend and fellow artist, Greg Amenoff between 1974 and 78. I’ve been meaning to convert these for many years but hadn’t taken the time until now. I divided the MFA video into 8 different bits.

We did these with one of the very first reel to reel Panasonic “Portapacks.” Of course, B/W and ancient by todays standards. We almost got these on SNL back then, but they took Bill Wegman’s dog videos instead. We made the MFA video under a National Endowment grant from the Education dept of the MFA. Not sure if the people we worked with kept their jobs after this video was released?

Altogether, there’s about 20 other short vignettes we did and I’m working on those for fun in my spare time.

Hovering Bubbles

This is another satirical video made by Greg Amenoff (Bill Bob) and myself (Dan Pike) with our “Fine Art Troupers” at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the mid-1970’s. This bit is called “Hovering Bubbles”. -Dean Nimmer, February 2015

Oriental Sculptural Expert

This is another satirical video made by Greg Amenoff (Bill Bob) and myself (Dan Pike) with our “Fine Art Troupers” at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the mid-1970’s. This bit is called “Oriental Sculpture Expert” – you have to see it to get it.

Incredible that we got away with these antics filmed in the actual museum, but it was sponsored by the MFA’s, art education dept as a “public service video.” I think they were all fired soon after it’s release! -Dean Nimmer, February 2015

Librarians

This is a 3-minute video clip of Greg Amenoff and me explaining “portraiture” at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1978 – yes, 1978. This was one segment of many satire videos we did on art and museums, and yes, those are mutton chop sideburns I had back then. -Dean Nimmer, February 2015

Pyramid – Day Two

The near perfect proportions of my pyramid have atrophied somewhat.. so I thought I’d spiff up the scene with some moving pictures. Katie Richardson (katierayart.com) nominated me for the Viral Art Challenge. I found all this white stuff lying around my front yard so I built a seven foot pyramid. ‪#‎viralartchallenge‬

COLLABOTRONICA: THE FICTION SCIENCE TRIANGLE

We are in a brick building with a red door from 1865. Existing in this building is a computer running a social media program called THE FICTION SCIENCE TRIANGLE. We activate a delivery system that has no physical location. We project our link with your interface and make available three fictions. We see two sisters walking through a re-imagined Holyoke residency program, the last known photograph of the HALFLIFERS and a post-human Korean dance forms dating workshop. We are now exploring speculative fictions by video makers who work together and apart.

THREE VIDEO WORKS:
FAMILIARS

THE LAST KNOWN PHOTOGRAPH OF THE HALFLIFERS
7:00 – STEREO – VIDEO – HALFLIFERS: TORSTEN ZENAS BURNS & ANTHONY DISCENZA

ANIMATRONLOVE: (DARRIN MARTIN & TORSTEN ZENAS BURNS)

“What-If? In the Days When the Tiger Smoked” is the culmination of an ongoing project which began in Busan, South Korea in 2006. At the heart of the work is the unfolding of a role-playing workshop where participants reenact dates leading up to a fictional polyamorous romance. The performance, played by a rotating international cast of artists, leads to a group wedding and honeymoon between characters based upon two obscure Marvel superheroes and two internationally renowned art personalities. The happy foursome are Orlan, an artist whose actual redefinition of her own body via plastic surgery confronts representations of woman throughout art history; Stelarc, an artist whose cybernetic mission in life is to render the body obsolete; the Scarlet Witch, a mutant superhero who has unlimited powers over probability, and the Vision, a “synthezoid” superhero whose mechanically fabricated body contains a human soul. What-If?…unfolds the entangled story that brought this romantic foursome together spanning the gulf between genders and representations; the body and technology.
Named after the Korean saying for “Once Upon a Time,” our project In the Days When the Tiger Smoked, fuses together our two single-channel video works from 2009, What-If? & What-If? Beyond a carnalove . New works from our polyamorous databank of speculative fiction include a series of video loops. Honeymoon Valley is an ambient exploration of both historic and contemporary South Korean sites and reengages with the terrain where our characters first met and later honeymooned. Wundagore Spa enacts a Proxy-Orlan character’s simulated operation with sticky and reckless abandon.
AnimatronLove revisits variations on the choreography performed by our characters’ virtual avatars contextualized into a series of alternate worlds.
